An executive couple in a Westwood mid‑century, recently bought, kitchen frozen in 1992. They wanted a single bookmatched Calacatta island as the room's anchor. The architect wanted hidden appliances. The clients wanted a kitchen that was easy to clean, not a museum.
A single 8‑foot bookmatched Calacatta slab is a $24K piece of stone. One mistake during fabrication or install and we are buying a second one. The hidden appliance integration required cabinet faces flush to within 1/16th of an inch. And the room had a slab leak that was not on the disclosure.
Slab fabrication was filmed for our records. We drilled witness holes before the cut. The slab leak we found on the walk‑through was repaired before any cabinets came in, a 4‑day add to the schedule, fully covered in the original fixed price. Hidden appliance integration was managed by our cabinetry partner. The room finished six days ahead of the contract.
We had two contractors quote this room. ACE was the only one who said the slab leak existed before we asked. They had to find it on the walk‑through.
